DSL vs. Designated Cable: Understanding The Differences!

July 22, 2014 By Marcus Allen 22 Comments

DeathtoStock_Wired2In today’s society, the speed and quality of your internet is a major concern to individuals and businesses.  The speed can be of utmost concern for businesses, especially those with which time is of the essence!  We often see our clients debating DSL options compared to dedicated lines for internet service.  DSL verses a dedicated cable can be a major debate for businesses and there are many factors that determine which is the best option for you.

A dedicated cable line can be a great option for many situations.  In general, cable can support much higher bandwidth speeds and the service radius from the CMTS can be much larger compared to DSL.  Cable modems are typically faster, assuming the cable infrastructure if updated and well-maintained.  However, cable is an RF network and is much more susceptible to transient interference issues within that network.  Also, performance of the network will degrade over time as more users come to the CMTS.

DSL has many merits as well.  Unlike a dedicated line, DSL has a dedicated circuit, which prevents degradation with increased users.  DSL is often found to be more consistent and not prone to interruptions or interference in high traffic times.  Depending on the equipment available in your area, DSL may be a better option for your business.

Making decisions about your internet needs are important for your business and the efficiency with which you can conduct business.  At Pantera Technologies, we understand that each business has unique needs that can be met by IT solutions.  We also understand the local providers and can help you make the best decision for your business!

The Age Of Video In Telecom

June 14, 2014 By Marcus Allen Leave a Comment

Pantera Video TelecomDo you remember a time before YouTube?  Perhaps you even remember adjusting bunny-ear antennas and being forced to sit and watch television commercials?  Video has come a long way and is now heavily used for both recreational and professional use.  Many businesses rely on videos as a resource for their staff, as well as a way to connect with their clients.  At Pantera Technologies, we understand how video is changing the way people use the internet and how that affects the internet and telecom solution for your business.

Why Is Video So Important Today?

  1. One of the main reasons why online video is so valuable is because an increasing number of Americans own internet-enabled devices.  These devices provide an alternative to television.  In a study by Nielsen, 36 million people used their smartphones in 2013 to watch online videos.
  2. Online media have made it easy to upload videos.  Sites like YouTube, Vimeo, and more make it very easy for amateurs and professionals to share their video content with the world.
  3. Companies have turned to video as a resource and an advertising tool to reach their customers.  How-to videos, introductory videos, and online ads are just a few ways companies are utilizing this popular tool.
  4. Online streaming of television, movies, and other videos has increased exponentially in the last five years. Cable companies were expected to witness a decline in their base to 53.9 million homes from 54.8 million at the end of 2013, according to LA Times.  Cable companies are losing customers to web-based streaming options, such as Amazon Prime, Netflix, Hulu, and channels’ websites.  Therefore, online video ads have gains prominence even more.

So there’s more video online…  So what?  One of the contributing factors toward video being successful is fast, dependable internet.  At Pantera Technologies, we understand the technical needs to support the constant barrage of video online today.  Our analysis and execution of your telecom system ensures that your company can handle the higher files and streaming that is so prevalent on the web today.  Talk to our team to discuss your internet needs and how our expertise can help you make the best decisions!

Floating On The Clouds: The Basics of Cloud-Based Services

June 11, 2014 By Marcus Allen Leave a Comment

screen-shot-2014-05-27-at-3-08-35-pmThe Basics of Cloud-Based Services

Up until a few years ago, when someone referred to the cloud, it usually meant the white puffy things in the sky. Today, the cloud is becoming extremely in demand and essential for most businesses and individuals. Healthy telecommunications will ensure that a business is ready to handle the digital data needs that come with a cloud-based society.

Where are my files?

Going to the cloud means storing your electronic files on large, off-site hard drives or using web-based applications to access through an online connection. Companies generally utilize cloud-based computing as a way to increase capacity, improve functionality or add additional services without having potentially expensive infrastructure costs or requiring additional IT staff. While this is a great direction for many companies, it is important to discuss with a telecommunications expert to see if a cloud-based system is the best data storage system for you.

Can I Lose My Info?

Just because your data is stored on a cloud-based server, doesn’t mean that you can’t be proactive and protective with your information. Servers can have issues whether they are housed in your office or in another country. The same best practice of backing up your data files is still valid. Our data experts at Pantera Technologies can help make the information backup process a seamless process.

How Can Cloud-Based Computing Help My Business?

Cloud-Based Computing can help alleviate costly spending on staff and infrastructure, while giving you full functionality for use. Cloud-Based Computing also allows for flexibility and smart spending. Perhaps there is a time of year where you need more capacity or programming needs.   With many cloud-based solutions, you can ramp up capacity for several months to support the peak period and then scale back when activities return to normal. This helps you align your IT spending with your actual needs. Ultimately, with as fast as technology changes, a cloud-based computing system may be the best solution for your changing business. An analysis with one of our IT specialistscan help you make smart decisions on cloud-based computing.

Not only are cloud-based solutions new to the market, but the technologies change so fast that many users are demanding a cloud-based solution for their data storage.  LetPantera Technologies take the confusion out of the many options you have for your business. We love finding the right solution for our clients and helping them succeed!
